Well, it’s really happening:

I have very mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I am happy, for obvious reasons. I got 5 offers on my house, the sale is moving along quickly, I’m getting pretty much everything I want. Can’t complain. On the other hand, I’m leaving the little house I hoped to stay in until I got carted off to the old age home, and I’m realizing what a gem it really is. How many nearly 100-year old houses get a pretty much unqualified thumbs up from the house inspector? Not many. I will miss my humble abode, but it had to be done, that’s all there is to it. The only thing left is the sewer inspection (which I admit I am a bit worried about – let’s just say it’s the original sewer, you get the idea), the appraisal, and if all goes well, I’m outta here.

On the work front, I’ve given notice (interestingly, it made me feel sad, not relieved, which was very disconcerting) to my boss, who asked me to wait a few weeks before making a formal announcement. I complied, of course, but I’ll be telling everyone next week. While I’m not looking forward to that at all, I must say it will be a huge relief to not be, um, dissembling all the time. I’m also very excited to have the opportunity to go to Yosemite in a few weeks for a few days for a conference. I have never been there. That always surprises people, but the truth is that if I didn’t work for the California State Parks Foundation, I’d probably never leave the city. I’m not really an outdoorsy sorta girl. So that’s been a gigantic perk of the last 13 years. My eyes have been opened to nature and its pleasures in a way that never would have happened but for my job. I’m very appreciative of that.

On the personal side, it seems like all I really do is shop these days. I shop on-line a lot, at stores that give a Peace Corps discount. I’ve now purchased all the major items I need. Luggage:

I especially love the rolling duffel bag! Kudos to Eagle Creek for the 50% discount to Peace Corps volunteers, that’s a really cool thing to offer. I got a down sleeping bag (thanks to fellow Georgian PCV Cody Hough for the recommendations on what to buy, because I hadn’t a clue), a Steripen (yeah, for those of you who don’t know – that was me up until a few weeks ago – it’s a battery-run wand that you activate and then stir your water with it to purify/make potable) … you get the idea. This is SO NOT ME. But it will be. Stay tuned.

I have a wonderful rolling “body bag” that I will never use. If you want it you may have it. A lot of flight attendants had them for their shopping adventures in Asia. Let me know and I’ll get it to you. I will miss you – some how I felt you were my security blanket in dealing with State Park!
